Speakers

Gayle Bedard is District Principal for Aboriginal Education for School District #36, Surrey. She is Tsimshian from the First Nations community of Port Simpson (Lax Kw’Alaams). Gayle is passionate about Aboriginal Education, and her lifelong commitment is to enrich the lives of educators and students about the impacts of history and how it affects the success rates of Aboriginal children in today’s education system.

Perry Smith is the District Principal for Aboriginal Education in School District #34 (Abbotsford). Perry is a member of the Bonaparte Band in the Shuswap Nation. His graduate work was
done at the University of Victoria in Counselling Education. Perry is an avid Pow wow dancer and looks forward to the summer months in order to travel the Pow wow trail.

Caroline (Kerry) Mahlman is the Principal of District Aboriginal Programs and Services and District Partnerships in School District No. 46 (Sunshine Coast). Now in her 30th year as an educator in British Columbia, Kerry has taught and provided educational leadership in the public system at all levels from Early Childhood through to Elementary, Secondary, Community College and University. The focus of Kerry’s life is honouring and supporting Aboriginal learners through working with each person and pushing for change in the system.
