Happy New Year! I wish everyone a wonderful and enjoyable year working with students in the schools.
In this month’s Educational Leadership journal, “The Effective Educator”, the question is asked,” Tell me about your most effective teacher”. I know everyone has a story about their own effective teacher. We all have a teacher who made a difference in our lives. In the opening article in January’s issue, Marge Scherer uses the following common characteristic words to describe an effective teacher: caring, enthusiastic, positive, encouraging and understanding. Book Review: Tuned Out: Engaging the 21st Century Learner by Karen Hume |

Discussions around the direction of education with new technologies, mind/brain educational theories and engagement practices are becoming extremely popular, especially with movements such as personalised learning and engaging the 21 st century learning. More and more educational professionals and experts are producing resources and texts espousing the benefits, need and moral obligations of incorporating alternate strategies of engagement within the classroom with an urgency that is more often related to publishing deadlines than to classroom need.
