President’s Message

Dear Members,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a relaxing and restful holiday.

BCASCD is very proud of the work we accomplished in 2009. Our organization provided three fabulous professional development opportunities (technology, vulnerable children and differentiated instruction) for educators. Another important highlight for the organization was hosting the ASCD Board in late October. The ASCD Board visited schools in Richmond and Vancouver and they met with educational leaders from BCTF, BCSSA, BCPVPA, BCCPAC and the Ministry of Education. Throughout the Board’s visit they acknowledged that we have an excellent education system in British Columbia.

During the 2010 year, BCASCD will continue to focus on the following three themes; technology, vulnerable children, and differentiated instruction. It is important for BCASCD to connect educators with each other on issues that affect education and professional practice. For this reason, BCASCD will continue to be one of the provincial leaders in influencing effective classroom practice by offering professional development in the focus areas on the following three dates:

  • On February 11, we will host the Second Annual Education Panel – Education on the Technological Highway: “Touching Creativity”. Three internationally known educators, Dr. Robert Kelly, Dr. Barrie Bennett and Dr. Stuart Poyntz will debate and question the direction of education and technology in the future.
  • On April 15, Dr. Lee Brown will share his knowledge and understanding of aboriginal culture and the strategies we need to use in schools to help aboriginal children be more successful.
  • On October 22, 2010, at the annual conference, internationally known author and educator on Differentiated Instruction, Cindy Strickland, will present a full day workshop on the theoretical basis of differentiated instruction and why it is so important to today’s children.

Yes, BCASCD has an exciting plan in 2010 for educators to connect with each other at one of our exceptional professional development opportunities. Hopefully, you will be able to join us at one of the planned events. On behalf of the organization, it is my pleasure to wish all educators a wonderful and successful year of teaching and learning.
