Happy Easter! I hope everyone had a relaxing long weekend. As we enter the final stretch of another school year, I wish everyone a wonderful teaching and learning experience in your classrooms and schools.

I was fortunate to attend ASCD’s 65 th Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas, along with a number of our BCASCD Executive and educators from across Canada. ASCD Executive Director, Dr. Gene Carter expressed how this year’s conference theme, Critical Transformation, underscores the need for powerful change in learning and teaching to prepare our young people to be competitive and productive citizens. Thanks for Pushing the Creativity Button

by Leslie Andersson, Past-President

The Tech highway was again motoring with many thoughts and conversations as BCASCD hosted the 2nd Annual Education Panel on February 11 th.  This year’s three panelists, Dr. Robert Kelly, Dr. Barrie Bennett and Dr Stuart Poyntz shared their views on creativity and technology while the enthusiastic crowd prepared prompting questions to spur on intellectual discussion. Conversation surrounded the difficulties of weaving creativity into the classroom environment while ensuring the learning outcomes for all students are being met.  Staff work hard to be highly effective and creative, and it is this fine balance of remixing existing culture which allows students to open future doors.

The food was great and the conversation even better. We look forward to next year’s highway and where it will lead us!

I remember the moment early on in my teaching career when I finally understood the overwhelming complexity of what I was up against. I had just written a paper for grad school about Lev Vygotsky and the zone of proximal development (ZPD)—that synergistic sweet spot between what a learner can do on her own and what she becomes capable of when she's helped by a knowledgeable guide. Whiteboards' Impact on Teaching Seen as Uneven

While experts see whiteboards as powerful tools for improving instruction, teachers vary widely in their ability to use them effectively

by Kathleen Kennedy Manzo

Students hop out of their seats during Lonnise Gilley’s lessons as they compete to solve a geometry problem or compare the sides of color-coded shapes on the board in front of the class. As Gilley moves around the room probing students for answers, she engages the 9th graders in an interactive discussion on the Pythagorean theorem and the rules for classifying triangles. ASCD Annual Conference

by Bryn Williams

As a new participant at the ASCD annual conference in San Antonio, Texas, I prepared myself by carefully going over the entire schedule of sessions and mapping out all the options that I thought I would be most interested in attending. I studiously copied out the presenters I wanted to see, the rooms they were presenting in and the times for their sessions. I began the three day conference with equal mixtures of excitement, anticipation and confidence that I had set myself on a great plan to gain the most benefit from attending such a large conference.
