President's Report |
by Leslie Andersson (andersson_l@sd36.bc.ca)
Our world is changing rapidly, and our education system works hard to keep pace of our talented youth. New technologies are driving rapid innovation and constantly reshaping every aspect of how we live and work. In order for students to do well academically, they must be healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged. ASCD encourages educators to ensure that daily work with students addresses“The Whole Child”.
Our Children Deserve It.
Our Future Demands It.

A Praiseworthy Brain in Search of a Brainworthy School
|
A session with
Dr. Sylwester
On October 19, 2007, School District No. 20 (Kootenay-Columbia) and BCASCD hosted a workshop by Dr. Robert Sylwester entitled, “A Praiseworthy Brain in Search of a Brainworthy School”. Forty-five educators, trustees and parents from School District 20, 8 and 51 attended this session.
Everyone enjoyed Dr. Sylwester’s “story telling” type of presentation and his sense of humour. Current research from the cognitive neurosciences was presented in a practical, understandable format that was just as relevant to educators and classrooms, as to parents and families [more...]

In 2006, ASCD selected 11 schools out of 300 applicants to embark on a pilot project for each to develop a healthy school community. Of those 11 schools, 3 were chosen from Canada – Queen Elizabeth Secondary and Woodland Park Elementary from Surrey BC, and Iroquois Ridge High from Oakland, ON. The remaining schools and districts were selected from across the United States. [more...] |

ASCD Chicago Regional Meeting |
| by Margaret Ross
Chicago, the city of amazing architecture, jazz and the birthplace of the hot dog, really is no place to visit in February, but there I was, on February 8 and 9 attending the ASCD Southeast, Central and Caribbean Regional meeting.
