LEAP Conference

by Leslie Andersson (andersson_l@sd36.bc.ca)

Carolynn Schmor and I attended the annual LEAP conference on behalf of BCASCD in September as ASCD began the process of developing a new strategic plan, ensuring that members stay informed about and respond to the drivers of change in education. We looked at trends alongside other affiliate leaders, scanning to shape the future context of the education landscape. Hugh Price shared and lead a great discussion on the fact that too many young people are leaving school without the skills and knowledge needed to create a successful future for themselves. As leaders, we had the opportunity to offer suggestion for equity and access for effective education practice. William Bushaw lead a humorous and lively discussion on the Gallop Poll results and the effects on education. The data, while being American, demonstrated the public’s views on schools. It was great to hear that the public strongly supports their local schools and is proud of the work done in schools by educators. They are somewhat less supportive of provincial and state decisions. Gene Carter, the executive director for ASCD talked about what leaders should be doing to cultivate openness and a culture of change while meeting current demands for student performance and preparation for effective citizenship. His encouraging thoughts surrounded the positive effects that educators make, as they continue to seek for the best possible education of ‘The Whole Child’.

The networking opportunities were always the highlight, and we were proud to represent one of the most literate countries in the world that encourage students to move on their strengths and build on their weaknesses in a socially responsible way.
