Sometimes the quotes from the audience say it all! Rob Rankin put on an incredible in-service about assessment in the classroom at the October Provincial Pro Day in Kamloops. His rewarding comments that emphasized assessment as a process of metacognition for students were well received. Rob stressed that assessment as learning merges from the idea that learning is not just a matter of transferring ideas from someone who is knowledgeable to someone who is not, but is an active process of cognitive restructuring that occurs when individuals interact with new ideas. Students are the critical connectors between assessment and learning. The use of the Multiple Intelligences to demonstrate learning and to assess played key parts in his discussion.
On another but related note…the food was delicious and the staff at Grebe Centre were fantastic. Rob looks forward to providing further in-service to the thoughtful and inspiring group. Thanks to you, Rob; we learned a lot!
